Puffin Heaven!

July 7th. After an overnight stay near Vik, we went to Dyrholaey, rugged cliffs rising over the black sand beaches. It is a sea-bird reserve. We went for the puffins!

The Black Falls

Svartifoss (Black Falls) is in the large Skaftafell National Park.
The hexagonal shape of the basalt is a result of how the lava cooled.
Skaftafell National Park also includes some of Vatnajokull, the biggest glacier in Europe. We hiked up but the fog came down and we didn't see nothing!

Glacier Lagoon

The fog followed us that day to the Glacier Lagoon (Jokullsarlon). Huge chunks of glacial ice floating in the lake. This was the coldest place we went in Iceland.

Egilsstadir

July 8th. After a scenic drive up and down fjords, we arrive in Egilsstadir and stayed in a large guest house which has been in operation since the 18th century. Jeff and Donna made friends with the cows on the farm. That evening we went to Seydisfjordur (see below).

Seydisfjordur

An attractive town of Norwegian heritage, at the base of a long tight fjord, has a reputation as a bit of an artists' colony. We had pizza at a gallery cafe.

And an exciting ride back to Egilsstadir when the mountain pass fogged up.
